Tips to Prepare for Winter Storms in Omaha

9/30/2021 (Permalink)

Winter weather can cause catastrophic damage in the Midwest. Winter storms and blizzards can bring extreme cold, freezing rain, snow, ice, and high winds. Storms can have little warning, and can last for several days. With the high winds, power can be knocked out, leaving many without a heat source.

Prepare for a Winter Storm

Make sure your home is properly insulated. Open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around your pipes.  Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets to help prevent frozen pipes.

Gather plenty of food, water, medicine, and other supplies like batteries. You want to have enough in case a storm keeps you home for awhile. Keep an eye on the weather by staying up to date on all weather alerts for your area.

When the storm hits, stay off the roads as much as possible. Road conditions and visibility can deteriorate quickly. Stay inside as much as possible. Frostbite and hypothermia can develop quickly in cold temperatures.

Planning and preparing ahead of time can prevent unwanted winter storm disasters.
